Arica – Cusco
I depart from Arica, Chile towards the Peruvian city of Cusco. The route I take leads over the famous Lake Titicaca.
Lake Titicaca, located between Peru and Bolivia, is the highest lake with regular (commercial) boat service on Earth. It lies at an altitude of 3,812 metres and, with 8,562 km², is the largest freshwater lake in South America
There are many large and small islands in the lake that contain remnants of the Inca culture, such as Amantaní, Isla del Sol, Isla de la Luna. The lake also contains several dozen inhabited artificial “reed” islands made of the totora plant, built and lived on by the indigenous Uru tribe.
After flying over Lake Titicaca, I head for a landing in the city of Cusco, located at an altitude of over 3300 m. In the pre-Columbian period, the city was the centre of the Inca Empire and is still referred to as the historical capital of Peru.
